  8.     Okay, this is a discussion on magick, eh? Whoa, like,
  9. conjuring demons, throwing hexes, and predicting the futunre?
  10. Manipulation of the Hodge/Podge to TOTAL WORLD DOMINATION?! No.
  11. First off, any demons that might be around aren't gonna waste time
  12. with Discordians (they're after the Greyfaced Religions, 'cause
  13. the guilt they can lay on them...). Throwing hexes is painful, and
  14. bad for the joints. And if you are worried about the future, and
  15. world domination, then you have no business trying out magick
  16. anyway. So, like, what is Discordian magick, eh? Okay, Discordian
  17. Magick is a way in which the Discordian practicing it (called a
  18. Phool) to either add to or create Eristic Vibes or to deflect or
  19. destroy Aneristic Vibes.
  20.  
  21. Some Terms:
  22. ----------- 
  23.     Vibes: Psycho-emotional energy given off be humans and other
  24.     creatures.
  25.     
  26.     Eristic: Pertaining to Eris; pertaining to chaos in general.
  27.     
  28.     Aneristic: Against Eris; pertaining to order in general.
  29.     
  30.     Phool: one who is aware of the presence an actions of Vibes
  31.     and uses Discordian Magick to manipulate the same
  32.     
  33.     Face: An aspect of Discordian Magick; the category of magick
  34.     
  35.     Nature: The end-product of Discordian Magick
  36.     
  37.     Hodge: The pseudo-Zen force of Order in the world
  38.     
  39.     Podge: The pseudo-Zen force of Chaos in the world
  40.     
  41.     The Doctrine: things have a tendency to work out ok in the end
  42.     
  43.     Ju-Ju: The "aftershocks" of Discordian Magick; the long-term
  44.     effects.
  45.     
  46.     The Sacred Chao: The image of the Hodge and Podge.
  47.     
  48.     Greyface: One who unconsciously generates Aneristic Vibes.
  49.     
  50.     THEM: A group who consciously generates Aneristic Vibes;
  51.     Phools gone Greyface.
  52.     
  53.     Discordian: One who unconsciously generates Eristic Vibes.
  54.     
  55.     Norm: A normal, vibe-unaware, guy-on-the-street. Typically
  56.     Aneristic, due to the great amount of ambient Aneristic Vibes
  57.     in the world.
  58.     
  59. Vibes: what they be.
  60. -------------------- 
  61.     Okay, vibes are like energy which is given off by all
  62. creatures.  You may know of Vril or Kirlian Aura or Alpha Waves or
  63. some other nonsense. Vibes may or may not be them, its really not
  64. important.  What IS important is that they exist, and if they
  65. exist, then they can be manipulated and created and destroyed.
  66. (Destroying waves can be bad Ju-ju. Be careful.) How do we know
  67. vibes are there? Because, if you open up, you can feel them.
  68. You're being hit by them all the time, just most people aren't
  69. aware of them. Next time someone is being extremely chaotic,
  70. notice how that person's actions and presence affect you... the
  71. same for someone being extremely ordered.  Sometimes, the vibes
  72. can change your mood, your attitude, even y our health. So, now
  73. that I know the vibes are there, what can I do with them? Okay,
  74. eh? So, there are two basic kinds of vibes: Eristic and Aneristic.
  75. Eristic Vibes are pulses of chaotic energy, while Aneristic Vibes
  76. are pulses of ordered energy... this means the fundamental
  77. concepts of chaos and order, not the waves themselves.  (I.E. if
  78. vibes have a structure, both Eristic and Aneristic probably have
  79. the same structure. It is the kind of energy which differs, not
  80. the structure.)Eristic Vibes USUALLY cause Chaos, Discord and
  81. Confusion (the first three Faces (q.v.)) and Aneristic Vibes
  82. USUALLY cause Beurocracy and Aftermath (the last two Faces). I say
  83. USUALLY because, like most things, there are several occasions
  84. when the five will cross over. A Phool must learn to appreciate
  85. the spinning of the Chao, and the counter-push-pull of the Hodge
  86. and Podge, and learn when Eristic Vibes are needed, and when
  87. Aneristic Vibes are needed.  As a very general rule, the world
  88. needs more Eristic Vibes... there are far more Greyfaces in the
  89. world than there are Discordians.

  91. Faces

  93.          
  94.     Okay, eh, Discordian Magick is not exempt from the Law of
  95. Fives.  There are five facets to Discordian Magic, just like the
  96. five faces of a pentagon. Ergo, to keep in line with this analogy,
  97. these aspects of magick have been termed "Faces". The 5 Faces are,
  98. naturally: Chaos, Discord, Confusion, Beurocracy, and Aftermath.

  111.     When a Phool manipulates Vibes, the method in which the Vibes
  112. are manipulated is defined by the Face.
  113.     
  114.     Some brief explanations:
  115.     
  116.     Chaos: Vibes manipulated within the Face of Chaos, generally
  117. speaking, are designed simply to increase the amount of Eristic
  118. Energy in the area. Chaos magick is specifically unorganized, and
  119. often purposeless. It is used to change mood, tone, and is also a
  120. way to banish Greyfaces.
  121.     
  122.     Discord: Vibes manipulated within the Face of Discord are
  123. deigned to affect large numbers of Norms, and sometimes Greyfaces.
  124. It is the second most destructive form of magick, and requires
  125. care in its use.  It causes Norms to act in ways they would not
  126. normally, often for reasons they do not fully comprehend.

  128.     Confusion: The most common form of magick, Vibes manipulated
  129. within the Face of Confusion is a Discordians primary weapon
  130. against Anerism. It is a subtle form of magick, designed to
  131. gradually wean norms and Greyfaces from their hopeless addiction
  132. to Aneristic Vibes.
  133.     
  134.     Beurocracy: Vibes manipulated within the Face of Beurocracy
  135. must be treated with care, as they can easily slip into Aneristic
  136. ones instead of Eristic. Beurocratic Magick is designed to affect
  137. a large number of Norms into unconsciously succumbing to Eristic
  138. Influence.  When used especially well, this form of magick is
  139. particularly effective against Greyfaces, as they may not even
  140. know that they are being manipulated.
  141.     
  142.     Aftermath: Vibes manipulated within the Face of Aftermath are
  143. the most dangerous tool a Phool can use. They are by far the most
  144. destructive, and involve a permanent destruction of Vibes, and a
  145. ceasing of the Spinning of the Chao. Aftermath Magick is serious
  146. stuff. It means a closing and a te rmination of Energy. Don't use
  147. this stuff unless you're, like, really sure of yourself and are
  148. prepared to accept responsibility for the Ju-Ju you may cause.
  149.     
  150. Nature, eh?
  151. -----------
  152.     The Nature of Magick is not really an integral part of the
  153. Magick, but it helps the Phool to classify the effect his magick
  154. will have on the world. There are many natures, but some of the
  155. basic ones are:Creative: Designed to create ambient vibes. Usually
  156. called "Eristic Creative" or "Aneristic Creative".
  157.     
  158.     Destructive: As Creative, but designed to destroy the vibes in
  159. question.
  160.     
  161.     Anti-Greyface: Countering Aneristic attacks by Greyfaces, or
  162. planting seeds of Chaos in their subconscious.
  163.     
  164.     Personal: Magick designed to alter the Phool's own moods,
  165. feelings, and attitudes. Helps recover from Aneristic attacks.
  166.     
  167.     Ritual: The ritual is a means of simply causing Ju-Ju. It
  168. rarely has immediate effects, but when done, the Vibe Ju-Ju will
  169. cause long- term effects which the Phool may desire.
  170.     
  171.     Oracle: A means of "seeing t he future"... not really, but
  172. what it does is open the Phool's mind to ideas which may indeed
  173. affect the future.

  175. Part Five
  176. ---------
  177.     This has been a very basic introduction into the theories and
  178. practice of Discordian Magick. It has been presented in hoped of
  179. laying a groundwork for further study and explanation in the
  180. upcoming work _The Confunomicon_. If there are any who would like
